This week, we heard from Keith Ecker–essayist, journalist, comedian, and co-producer of the hit charitable reading series Essay Fiesta. Keith shared some of his thoughts on Chicago’s creative pool and social media.
What do you love about Chicago?
The close-knits arts community. There is so much room for experimentation and collaboration. It’s no wonder why the city is known as one of the best breeding grounds for new talent.
What do you love about (or why do you love) writing in Chicago?
Like New York, there is always something going on and inspiration can easily be found at every corner. Unlike New York, you have some breathing room. You can actually afford more than just the necessities and not feel like your life is dominated by the rat race.
What advice do you have for writers who want to sell or promote their work?
Get on social media. In this day and age, there is no excuse for not using tools like Facebook and Twitter. They are free. They expose you to a large audience. And they provide metrics that you can reference to an agent or publisher who wants to get a better sense of your reach.
The Essay Fiesta Reading Series is welcoming CWC attendees to the reading on Saturday, September 15th. Check out our schedule for more details. Keith can be reached at keithecker@gmail.com.
