Literary agent Joanna MacKenzie wowed the crowd at Query Letter 101 with her in-depth knowledge of the process. Joanna shared successful and unsuccessful query letters, and discussed why each one worked or didn’t.
She also highlighted how an agent can be essential to a writer’s career. Not sure if you would benefit from a literary agent? Here are three reasons Joanna gave us that might change your mind:
1. You need a literary agent because they are your entry to your next level of publication.
2. Agents help you reach a wider audience — they are the gatekeepers to the large publication houses.
3. Literary agents help you get the best deal for your work. Part of their job is negotiating your publishing contract, and if you have an agent who loves your work, s/he will go to bat for you.
