What is the Chicago Writers Conference?

A three-day learning experience for writers of all genres at any point in their career. There are educational talks and panel discussions, intensive workshops, and social events.

Where & when does it take place?

Conference Chicago, 525 S. State Street, Chicago, Illinois, From 2:00 pm on Friday, September 23, 2016  to 1:00 pm on Sunday, September 25.  All attendees are invited to join us on Friday.

I’m traveling from out-of-town. Is there a hotel nearby with a conference rate?

Yes! We have a block of rooms for attendees at Hotel Blake, 500 S. Dearborn, Chicago. Reserve your room by calling 1-312-986-1234 and mention “Chicago Writers Conference 2016 – #cwc2016.” King rooms are available at a rate of $189/night and must be reserved by August 24, 2016.

What does admission include?

All admission types (Revisions [$225], or Final Edits [$275]) include access to:

  • All General Sessions Friday-Sunday
  • Board Room Talks and Closing Conversations
  • Social events on Friday and Saturday evenings

Add-ons (Intensive Workshops, Small Sessions, Practice Pitches, and Pitchfest) require an additional fee.
Session types with “Addl Fee” on the schedule indicate an additional fee is required.

We do not have one-day or discounted admissions.

What are add-ons?

Add-ons are additional learning or pitching opportunities. They are explained below. An additional fee is required, and add-ons are not refundable.

What is a Friday Intensive Workshop? How much does it cost?

Intensive Workshops are led by a professional writer and give you a chance to do some hands-on work. This year, we are offering Break Into Freelance Writing and Crafting Dialogue.

Workshops are limited to 10 participants, so you get personalized attention. Fee: $99. Your confirmation page will have a link to sign up for an Intensive after you purchase admission.

What is a Small Session? How much does it cost?

Small Sessions are round table discussions with an industry professional on various topics. Check the schedule for specific topics and times. Each session is limited to 8 participants. Fee: $10. Sign up for a small session before you check out with your registration.

What is Pitchfest? How much does it cost?

Pitchfest is an opportunity to meet one-on-one with a literary agent or publisher to pitch your book project. The agent or publisher will let you know if they would like to see more. Pitchfest meetings are 7 minutes long. Fee: $25 per meeting. Your confirmation page will have a link to sign up for Pitchfest after you purchase admission.

What is a “Practice Pitch”?

New! Practice pitches are a chance for your to run your pitch past a seasoned professional before you meet with an agent or publisher. Your practice recipient will give you feedback to improve your pitch.  Fee: $15. Your confirmation page will have a link to sign up for a Practice Pitch after you purchase admission.

Do I have to pay to attend the social events?

No. All registered conference attendees and participants have access to our Friday and Saturday Cocktail Parties and our networking room on Saturday. Just make sure to wear your badge.

What if I need to cancel? What if I can’t make a pitchfest, a practice pitch, or a small session I signed up for?

You may transfer your registration to another individual for no charge. Add-ons are not refundable. See our cancellation policy for conference fees here. No refunds or credits will be issued after August 31, 2016 for any reason.
